Accelerating Action: Voices from Bright Machines Featured Image

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, it will take 134 years to achieve gender parity. Despite progress, women still face disparities in pay, leadership opportunities, and career growth. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action,” calls on individuals and organizations to take meaningful steps toward empowering women and closing these gaps.

At Bright Machines, we are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where talent is valued equally, regardless of gender. Continuing our tradition, we asked our female employees to share their experiences, the challenges they’ve faced, and the changes they believe will help create a more equitable future.

What is one lesson you have learned in your career that has helped you?
Riona Yoshida, Mechanical Engineer: “One of the most important lessons I have learned as an engineer, and in life at large, is to “just ask the question.” By that, I mean not being afraid to reach out to my peers when I find myself stuck, wanting a second opinion, or simply curious about something. Growing up, I always loved solving puzzles on my own and the joy that comes with the final ‘aha’ moment. Somehow, that sentiment imparted a misunderstanding that I had to do everything alone. I am grateful to have realized over time that being unsure isn’t something to be embarrassed about and doesn’t take away from learning. Unabashedly raising my hand led me to explore paths I wouldn’t have seen and dive deeper into ones I was already on. So, now, I always try to overcome my initial hesitance and “just ask the question!”
What is one barrier women face in engineering, and how can it be addressed?
Carolina Molina Sanchez, Service Engineer: “One major barrier women face in engineering and field service is the persistence of prejudice and limiting expectations. Too often, women must work harder to prove they belong, even when their skills and experience speak for themselves. It’s important to create an environment where talent and abilities are valued equally, regardless of gender. Women should have access to the same opportunities for growth, leadership, and advancement without unnecessary obstacles. Support systems like mentorship, inclusive policies, and fair evaluation processes can help level the playing field. When companies actively work to remove these barriers, they also strengthen their teams and drive innovation across the industry.”
What are the skills women in finance should focus on to accelerate their careers?
Anna Boado, Assistant Controller: “Determination, courage, attention to detail, effective communication, collaboration, and empathy are just some of the key qualities that strong women possess in the field of Finance and Accounting. Balancing a career in fast-paced startups while raising a family of four has been challenging, but strong mentors and supportive leaders have made all the difference. Their understanding and empathy have motivated me to push harder, excel in my work, and maintain balance. I truly believe that people are a company’s greatest asset, and their support empowers each team member to succeed. Be strong, be courageous, and believe that anything is possible with the right support.”
How can companies support more women in high-impact operational roles?
Veronica Sanchez Arroyo, Supply Chain Manager: “Supporting women in high-impact operational roles is a smart business move that drives growth and innovation because of what women bring to the table. Companies can start by eliminating bias in hiring and promotions, ensuring opportunities are based on merit rather than outdated perceptions. Pay equity is crucial—regular audits and transparency help close wage gaps and ensure women get the recognition they deserve. Valuing strengths like emotional intelligence, resilience, and multitasking makes teams stronger and more effective. Flexible work policies allow women to balance career and personal responsibilities without limiting their potential. Investing in mentorship and leadership programs builds a strong pipeline of female executives. When companies create an environment where all talent can thrive, they position themselves for long-term success.”

 

As we reflect on these experiences, one thing is clear—progress requires action. Championing gender equity means breaking down barriers, fostering an inclusive culture, and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to grow and lead.
